World Most expensive Melon (Yubari cantaloupe) also known as Yubari King
In 2008, a pair of Yubari cantaloupes sold for 2.5 million yen, or about $22,000. (I assume that these were the first available that year, though I haven’t been able to confirm it.) The Yubari King, like the Densuke, is purportedly a good melon to give as a gift—a prestige melon, if you like.
A Yubari King is only a Yubari King if it’s grown in Yubari, a former mining town on Hokkaido, and you pay for the name, not the taste—although the taste is supposed to be nice. Today the melons are typically sold in pairs, in nice wooden boxes, for about $225.
